The Naomh Brid under 9 hurlers took part in short league based tournament last weekend at Woodlands coming up against teams form St Johns, Perases, Eire Og & St Endas.
The tournament was organised by David Magowan from Eire Og. Unfortunately a number of sides did nit turn up on the day and therefore the format was somewhat restricted. Nonetheless the young Naomh Brid side performed well throughout with 3 games.
The first game up say Naomh Brid pitched against a strong St Enda’s side. Despite some determined hurling form the South Belfast side, the side from the North of the city proved much too strong and ran out winners.
Second up for Naomh Brid was a game against the hosts Eire Og. Naomh Brid got off to a real flyer and took a 4 goal to no score lead. In the 2nd period Eire Og came back into the contest and registered two scores. However the boys form Naomh Brid were determined to maintain their dominance and registered further scores to finish out he game 7 goals to 2 winners.
The final game of the afternoon pitted Naomh Brid against the tournament favourites St Johns. The first half saw Naomh Brid put in a very strong and determined performance to reach the interval and holding St Johns scoreless. On the restart St Johns got off to a real flyer and recorded three quick scores – all within the first minute. This left the lads from Naomh Brid somewhat shell-shocked and St Johns went on the record the victory and clinch the overall tournament honours.
Overall this was a great opportunity for the young lads from Naomh Brid to get experience and to help them refine their hurling skills. The team showed tremendous heart and attitude – especially when pitted against much stronger opposition from St Johns and St Enda’s. Playing against these teams really shows the level of skill the lads need to aspire to.
