A hard fought draw was the fairest result in today’s U16 Ladies challenge match with our friends for County Down. With a mix of seasoned 16’s and capable 14’s, the match was played in windy conditions at Boucher fields and although the cobwebs were evident in a few of the girls, these soon were cleared with a ‘no holds barred’ encounter which saw commitment and effort in plenty from both teams.
The wind played a big factor in the first quarter with St Brigid’s getting off to a good start and using the conditions to their advantage. Similarly, Bredagh made full use of the breeze in quarter 2 to bring things back to within a point. As the 3rd quarter progressed, it was clear that the fitness levels are not yet where we want them to be as heavy ground and wind took its toll and the need for rolling substitutes become more acute. By the time the match closed, both teams had run themselves to a standstill with 5 goals and 6 points a piece being the closing result.
Often from these matches, the score is irrelevant and on this occasion, coaches and players learned plenty about what they need to work at on Monday and Wednesday training. All in all an enjoyable and good tempered game which sets the girls up nicely for their first competitive match away to St James’ next Saturday.
