Saturday past the teams from St Brigids travelled to Lisburn to play a series of games against the home side. St Brigids were represented by teams from P3, P4 and P5.
Following on from the “Magnificent 7” who performed heroics against Carryduff earlier in the year the P3’s this timeout were represented by the “Glorious 9”. Playing three 15 minute periods the team took a while to get going and were on the wrong side of some harsh refereeing decisions (thanks to John & Brendan!). Playing a “rotational” system (rotating positions!) the boys got a taste of all positions for each of the 15 minute periods.
The first session was a very tight affair with St Brigids going into the break 0-2 : 0-1 ahead. Two well taken points by James Smith from acute angles helped settle the team and the team finished the period strongly. In the second period, St Brigids hit a rich vein of form with Daniel Guniness, Peter Webb and Patrick Finnegan playing some very neat hand passing moves. Patrick and Daniel also knocked over two excellent long range points while Peter set up attack after attack with some clever passes. In defence, Ethan Carlton, Rory Lynch and Frank McCormick battled like tigers – and worked their socks off. Frank put in some superb ‘tiger’ tackles, Ethan showed great hands with some excellent high catching and Rory showed coolness under pressure in clearing his lines well under heavy tackles. Playing as an extra midfielder at times, Phelim Lennon won tons of possession for the team, cleaning up any loose ball that was going and passing well to his team mates. Throughout the match, Joseph Finnegan took up excellent positions to help out his team mates in trouble. Joseph set up many great moves with a great display of long kick passes and also contributed with some excellent scores.
All the boys contributed to a very sporting and entertaining game and they took the opportunity to put into practice the many skills coached at the Sunday morning sessions. Well done to one and all.
The P3’s were well represented by James Smith, Joseph Finnegan, Patrick Finnegan, Phelim Lennon, Peter Webb, Frank McCormick, Ethan Carlton, Rory Lynch and Daniel Guinness.
Many thanks to the players and coaches of St Patricks Lisburn for hosting the teams and we look forward to returning the compliment in Belfast.
