St. Brigid’s made the trip to the county border to take on St. Mary’s Aghagallon in the all county
League Division 5 and came away with a facile victory with a record eight goals scored.
St. Brigid’s started brightly and despite two wides had got the first score from centre half forward Taylor
Then some poor tracking back by the visitors allowed a high ball into the small square
Where Finnegan and Morrissey were beaten by the burly centre half forward to the ball and St. Brigid’s trailed by a goal to one point. However this only stung the Malone boys into action and soon hot shot Rory Taylor began to strike point after point over the black spot. The home team were level three point to a goal, and had kicked three wide’s when, John Finnegan despite wearing “gutties” goaled from close range twice, then the flood gates opened and Kevin Finnegan , Benny Reilly, and Rory Taylor all hit the net.
The goals were a mixture of sloppy errors and well taken opportunities but the half time score of Naomh Mhuire 1:1 Naomh Brid 5:5 meant the contest was over at this stage.
Dallan McAlleenan (one) and substitute Chris Donnelly added (two) added further goals. A particular highlight of the second half was the pointed score of Greg Morris who impressed with a keen work rate and
accurate score from distance. The home team finished with two late goals but it did little to dent the difference between the two teams. The final score of 8:14 to 3:3 speaks for itself.
No doubt that caretaker manager Conway will be reporting back to Senior team boss MacSherry on some fine performances. Pride of place would no doubt be Rory Taylor who limped off with a knock to the knee
But turned in a virtuoso performance. Rory is the latest in a long line of young talented players to hail from the Malone Road nursery and will be in contention for a first team slot come the 12 August when St. Brigids take on Casements Portglenone in their quarter final match in the Senior championship at Cargin.
