ST. BRIGID’S PROVE TOO STRONG FOR ST MARY’S

St. Brigid’s Division 5 team had the honour of opening up the the Harlequins venue for the summer playing season and recorded a decisive victory over St. Mary’s Aghagallon in the league and now sit two pints behind the league leaders St. Galls.

St. Brigid’s played with the aid of a stiff breeze in the opening half yet began in a tentative manner. Despite O’Neill and Taylor getting some fine early pointed scores after the first quarter St. Brigids lead by 5 points to 2 yet they had the majority of the play. St. Marys had managed to convert two attacks from play and had they managed to kick over a few frees which were well within range the game would have been up for grabs.

Rory O‘Neill kicked a sideline ball over the sticks and the scores began to flow. Keelan McCrudden who had used his elusive pace to great effect scored three first half points from play, but spurned a golden chance to palm the ball with authority to the net, was opening up the defence and the Taylor brothers were buzzing about in the half forward line and suddenly the score board began to look a lot healthier for the home team. Greg McGonagle was getting through a mountain of work in the defence and the scores stopped being conceded. The half time score of 11 points to 3 in favour of the hosts at least gave the boys in blue a cushion to work with playing into the second half breeze.

St.Brigid’s upped the work rate in the second half and the chances began to appear and the deciding score came from the fist of Mel MacSherry who foolled the keeper by fisting over his own head and the keepers to open up a lead that was never to be tested again. Once Rory O’Neill goaled from short range, all the visitors could do was knock over a couple points from distance with the aid of the wind. The final score of 3:5 to 0:9 was welcomed by Manager Feargal McCann who had an able deputy in the form of Eunan Conway, both men were relishing the fact that the Division 5 team had quite a few home games in store.

Best for St. Brigid’s were Greg McGonagle and Duncan McAuley who got through an awful lot of work and who will be missed by the Club as he goes to America for the summer this week. Rory Taylor also impressed for the Malone Road boys.
