There were mixed fortunes for the two U12 teams on Friday night. The A squad claimed their first Div. 1 points with a well-deserved 3-4 to 0-1 home victory over a young Gort Na Mona side. However, the B squad tasted defeat for the first time in Div. 2 when losing heavily to a strong and determined Eire Og at Woodlands.
Despite missing a number of key personnel, the A team performed with great heart and and commitment, and seemed to have learnt lessons from their previous two outings. Cathal Conway and Conor Hughes (who weighed in with two excellent points) bossed the midfield while Sean McKernan marshalled the defence well. Up front, Philip O’Sullivan continued to catch the eye.
The B team, on the other hand, seemed over-awed by their physically bigger opponents. They were chasing shadows for long periods as Eire Og were winning every 50:50 challenge and began to ooze in confidence as a succession of excellent points saw them build an unassailable lead by the interval. St Brigid’s tried hard in the second half and can take heart from a much more competitive performance. Lesson: Gaelic Football is a contact sport and a hunger to be first to every ball is a winning formula.
