ON 17 OCTOBER 2010
PANEL: Paul Bradley, Patrick McKay, James McKenna, Cian McDonnell, Conor Slevin, Ben Doherty, Thomas McCarney, Shay Campbell, Ryan Austin, John O’Sullivan and Eoin Brown
Two Under 9 sides from the St Brigids Club were hosted at Cherryville by neighbouring Bredagh Club on Sunday 17 October 2010. On pitch one early exchange showed two evenly matched teams competing hard for possession and scores. In an excellent game of football, the hosts were eventually overcome by superior team work and shooting accuracy of the visitors from St Brigids who won the game after three competitive periods of football.
Strong performances in defence from Shay Campbell, James McKenna, Ryan Austin, Patrick McKay and Ben Doherty provided a solid platform for the St Brigid’s performance with the distribution from James McKenna a notable feature. At midfield, Paul Bradley, Eoin Brown and Thomas McCarney worked tirelessly to provide a steady stream of quality ball to the forward line and to stifle the threat of a mobile Bredagh midfield. In the forward line Cian McDonnell, Conor Slevin and John O’Sullivan excelled at converting possession to scores and refused to concede any easy possession from the Bredagh kick outs.
The standard of the play by both teams was indicated by the spontaneous round of applause from spectators at the final whistle.
On Pitch two a younger St Brigids side featuring some members of the Under 8 panel battled hard against a strong older Bredagh team. Despite the efforts of the Malone lads that featured youngsters Donal Bradley and Toirealach Brolly battling hard in the middle of the park, assisted in no small part by Paddy McAllister and David Toner. Their gallant efforts were only rewarded with a single point from a free won by Joseph McCarney, who also calmly brushed himself down, and stepped up to spilt the posts.
With the constant Bredagh pressure the defence were worked extra hard throughout the game, there were some excellent performances from Patrick Murphy, Michael Duffy, James Burns and Liam Donaldson who from the first minute to the final whistle gave 100% and made the Bredagh lads work for every score.
Further up the park the Muldoon lads Ciaran, Ronan and Joseph, along with Conor McRandal and David Toner whilst not seeing a lot of the ball, gave Bredagh’s defence a couple of scares.
The final score didn’t reflect the great effort put in by the young Malone Gaels however there were a lot of positives taken from the game.
