Amazingly, and refeshingly, we have reached the halfway point of the league season by mid June as the sun continues to shine. So far, it’s been a bit of a mixed bag for the southsiders, currently lying in fifth spot, who have combined some straightforward victories with below par performances that resulted in three narrow defeats. While our home form has been decent, including a creditable draw with league leaders Cargin, defeats to all four city rivals have been a notable disappointment. Conway’s charges will travel to the Bannside tomorrow evening in search of the points that would take them onto double figures against potential championship opponents Portglenone, who are in need of points at the wrong end of the table. Indeed, apart from Cargin, the remaining south west clubs are unusually clustered in relegation territory while resurgent St John’s and promotees Lamh Dhearg are flying high. St Gall’s, even in recovery mode after their All Ireland success, still take all the beating and are comfortably placed in second place, and no doubt ready to defend their championship title come August. With only four points separating us from bottom-placed Moneyglass there is no room for complacency. And now with exams out of the way and hopefully better news on the injury front, it’s time to rack up some league points as we build toward the third weekend in August.
