With just four rounds of fixtures remaining, Cargin remain in pole position following their narrow win over Naomh Brid on Sunday. Their only challengers are St Gall’s, whose priority must now be the Ulster Club Championship, which may tilt the odds in favour of the Bannsiders.

The real interest concerns the intriguing relegation battle where, following the last two rounds of matches, no less than seven clubs have now become embroiled in a desperate battle to avoid the drop. Gort Na Mona still remain anchored at the bottom, though they now have moved onto seven points with two wins from their last two outings, signalling their intention not to go down without a fight. Rasharkin, who are on nine points, currently take up the other relegation slot but have four matches in hand. However, they face a race against the clock to squeeze in their outstanding ties, as the league rules impose a strict fixtures deadline. St John’s and St Paul’s both secured valuable wins at the weekend to move within a point of Naomh Brid, Lamh Dhearg and Creggan, who each remain on 12 points after their defeats to Cargin, Gort Na Mona and St John’s respectively.

The picture may become clearer after this weekend’s round of fixtures which sees Naomh Brid host Gort Na Mona, Rasharkin at home to St Paul’s, and the Johnnies away to Creggan. But Musgrave Park is the place to be at 2.00pm on Saturday in what is a must-win game for both sides. Please turn out in numbers to support our team.
