How a month or two can change a result! Having won through to this year’s Feile by beating St Ergnatt’s in the final in March, St Brigid’s were dealt a blow to their hopes of retaining the league title as they were beaten by a strong Moneyglass team away from home last night. Depleted by injuries to several key players, we can take nothing away from a determined and focused home team who were out to exact their revenge for the Feile defeat.

The game started lively enough for St Brigid’s as Anna Moore netted decisively in the opening five minutes. It was one of the few highlights of a lacklustre first half from our girls as the strength and speed of the host team seemed to catch us out on several occasions.

2-4 to 1-2 up at the break, the home team again came out of the blocks quickly in the second half with a couple of quick scores.

As the second half progressed, St Brigid’s created several chances in front of goal but were let down by poor finishing. Despite being second to most balls and down by 10 points , our girls managed to lift their work rate and with a few well taken points, we got back to within a couple of scores. Only some inspired goalkeeping from the St Ergnatt’s ‘keeper kept Niomh Brid from closing the gap and perhaps rescuing the performance but it was not to be. Hard to pick any heroic moments for our girls last night!

A well deserved 4-8 to 2-6 to the home side has dented our hopes of consecutive league wins but if we learn our lessons from last night, we should be back in the mix come our next match. Well done St Ergnatt’s and our return visit in the Championship in a few weeks time should make for fascinating viewing.
