St Brigids U14 Div 2 team played a very strong St John’s team last Tuesday (29th April) at Boucher Road and despite a battling performance where the boys never gave up, St Johns eventually ran out the winners.

This St Brigids team is the clubs second U14 team and in each match is facing a series of ‘A’ teams – so week in and week out they are facing older, physically stronger and more experienced players. It is proving to be a tough season so far but the rewards will come in time.

Last night St Brigids started well and a terrific goal from Lochlain Quinn after lovely build up play involving  Jack McGurk and Patrick McKay meant that the sides were very evenly matched at the end of the first quarter. Conor Slevin and Patrick Doran were proving a good source of possession from Reuben Carleton’s kickouts while Ryan Austin, Thomas McCarney and Conor O’Hagan were making it difficult for the strong Johnnies forward line. Michael Canavan had a chance for another goal but his well taken shot was blocked by the Corrigan keeper. At midfield James McKenna and John Higgins worked hard although before the evening was over both had come off with injury, replaced by Patrick O’Hagan and Eoin McKernan.

At half time St Johns has built up a strong lead and our lads faced an uphill task to stay in the game. However James O’Rourke was fed early on by McGurk and produced an unstoppable shot to the Johnnies goal. Despite strong effort we couldn’t add to that score and in the final minute McKay sent a hard earned free narrowly wide.

In all 21 St Brigids players saw action last night on a lovely night for football. The team will get better with hard work and they have the appetite for that.
