Venue: Meadowbank Arena Magherafelt

Date: 1st March 2014

Brid Og’s U10 hurlers took part in the annual Ulster Provincial blitz at the magnificent Meadowbank arena in Magherafelt. The plan this year was to change the format so that the games were played in a league basis with the final games being graded.

Our opponents on the day were due to be Ballinascreen from County Derry, North Antrim side Oisins and County Tyrone side Eire Og Carrickmore. Unfortunately Eire Og did not field and they were replaced by Belfast side Saint Paul’s

Our first game was against Ballinascreen and from the start we were on top but our dominance only resulted in a 3 goal victory with Niall (2) and Pearse getting the final touches.

Our second game was against Oisin’s Glenariffe. We played against these opponents a couple of weeks ago in the North Antrim League and they had actually went on to take the ultimate victory in the Division 1 Final so we knew we were going to be up against a skilful physical team. We set up the side to make us hard to beat and our defence and midfield played brilliant however if we had a bit of luck in front of goal we could have nipped a victory however both camps were pleased with the 0-0 stalemate.

Our final league game was against Saint Paul’s and unfortunately they got an early lead. Credit to the team they tried to get on top of the game and Oran managed to scramble the sliotar over the line for the equaliser and with seconds to go Fintan got our second goal to take the victory which was probably a bit harsh on Saint Paul’s who had played some great hurling themselves.

At the end of the league series of games we had recorded 2 Wins and 1 Draw and this would have put us in joint first position in our group however with the delayed start due to the traffic issues in both Belfast and locally in Magherafelt we were unable to fulfil our final fixture to the disappointment of both the mentors and players alike however they can be very proud of their performance which has kept our unbeaten run going.

Thanks
I would like to thank Kevin for organising these games which allows for kids from different counties to field against each other. Thanks to our players parents and families for their support on the sidelines. A final thanks to our players who hurled brilliantly today and special mention to Caelem and Daniel who both played the first competitive games under Brid Og and I hope they enjoyed the experience.
