St Brigids Division 2 U12 squad maintained their terrific recent run with a comprehensive win over McDermotts at Woodlands. It was the 7th game in an unbeaten run and in truth apart from a 10 minute period in the first half, the result was never in doubt.
Patrick McKay was in top form and opened the scoring with a fine point, followed by a long range effort from Marcus Lynch. St Brigids registered a few near misses in the next quarter, Paddy McAllister unlucky not to score a goal after a passing move involving Ciaran Shearer and Conor Mulgrew. During that spell McDermotts registered 1-1, but the experienced defenders James McKenna, Ruari McDonnell and Ryan Austin soon regained a stranglehold, aided by young Harry O’Connor, Patrick O’Hagan and Patrick Doran. Behind them Thomas McCarney was strong in goals and the hosts would not register another three pointer.
After a fortuitous goal which came off a McDermotts defender, Ronan Agnew, who had an excellent game, scored a point which was followed up by Patrick McKay’s effort on the stroke of half time. It was a long range effort from a narrow angle which would have graced The Sunday Game.
After a few half time switches St Brigids soon began to make their dominance count. Tom Morrissey had moved to full forward and made an immediate impact with a well taken goal. Joe McCarney was also on and soon had 1-1 to his name and further scores came from McKay. Eunan Carlin and Jack McGurk were working hard and unleashing long balls into the forward line which paid off. John Higgins and Michael Canavan impressed when they came on, but in truth this was an all round team performance in which everyone could rightly be proud.
After a slow start this team has come into its own and can now take the field confidently against any opposition. Its onwards and upwards for the Naomh Brid U12 Div 2 team!
