Naomh Brid 6.5 McDermotts 1.1

The wind was a major factor in tonight’s U12 Division 2 game at Musgrave when the team playing with the strong breeze at their back had a big advantage. That was the home side in the first half and it was important to get scores early on.

The boys dominated possession and after two early points from Patrick Mckay and Ben Power, Peter Heaney goaled to establish the early St Brigids dominance. Ben Power was having a very effective game at full forward and would finish the first half with three goals to his name. He was ably assisted with some clever passing and hard work from a half forward line of Conor Mulgrew, who also pointed a free, McDonnell who notched a goal and Jack McGurk while in midfield Lochlainn Quinn, Tom Morrissey and Eoin Mitchell won plenty of possession to feed the forwards. Eoin Brown was very effective on the ball and kept possession well.

On the rare spells of McDermotts attacks in the first half Ruari McDonnell, Ryan Austin, Zach Porter and Michael Canavan kept the visitors away from the goal in which keeper Thomas McCarney was rarely troubled. The first half ended with the south Belfast boys well in the lead 5.3 to no score.

In the second half the anticipated onslaught did emerge early on but disciplined defence helped keep the score down. Tom Morrissey had gone into goals now and Thomas McCarney was foraging well out at midfield. Eventually St Brigids got back on top and goals from Eoin Brown and Patrick McAllister kept the scoreboard ticking over.

Playing against the wind was not easy and the St Brigids play in the second half especially was very disciplined the passing was accurate and the tackling tough. One interception and run from young Joseph McCarney typified the performance in defence while in attack McDermotts had no answer to our sustained pressure and controlled passing.

These were difficult circumstances in which to play a match and St Brigids adapted well in both halves.

The final score in the last match before the summer break was St Brigids 6.5, McDermotts 1.1
