Naomh Brid 2-10 Gort na Mona 3-5

St Brigids Division 2 squad got off the mark today with a hard earned win over neighbours Gort Na Mona. In the blistering early evening heat the boys posted a performance built on the kind of hard work which would see the Saffrons home this Sunday.

The home side got off to a great start with an early goal from full forward Ben Power. St Brigids forwards pressed the Gort na Mona kickouts and the pressure paid dividends with further early scores from Conor Slevin, and Power again. Thomas McCarney, Patrick McKay, James McKenna and Paul Bradley worked well as a forward unit, with solid support from Eoin Mitchell and Tom Morrissey in midfield. In the half back line Callum Webb, Daniel Foster and Patrick McCann kept the ball moving towards our forwards.

The Gort Na Mona side featured some strong fielders of the ball and their forwards got their share of possession. The Brigids defence tackled and blocked well and hard work from Ruari McDonnell, Zach Porter and Peter Heaney, capped with a solid goalkeeping performance from Peter Henvey helped keep the opposition tally down and at half time the score was 2.3 to 1.3.

In the second half Ryan Austin, Eddie Devlin, Michael Canavan, John Higgins and Eunan Carlin joined the fray and helped swing the game in our favour. Paul Bradley, Callum Webb and Patrick Mckay led the scoring in the second half and although a goal from the visitors kept the margin tight, Canavan saved well when they threatened further. St Brigids got the win their efforts – tonight and in recent weeks – fully merited.

This was a performance built on determination and hard work, in a punishing heat. A win well deserved.
