Sarsfields 2.6 – St Brigids 1.5

St Brigids U12 Div 2 squad are inching towards their first league win of the season, and it was within grasp this evening at Sarsfields when some slack marking and wayward shooting intervened. However this was the strongest performance of the season to date and the boys were unlucky to lose by two scores, on the wrong end of a 2.6 – 1.5 score line.

St Brigids opened well, and took a 2 point lead through a well worked and perfectly finished point from Thomas McCarney and a long distance free from Patrick McKay, whose overall work rate was tremendous. At this stage the midfield of Eoin Mitchell and Daniel Foster were on top and the forward line of Ciaran Shearer, Ciaran Muldoon and John Higgins were closing down space and making it difficult for the Paddies from kick outs.

Howeve,r some slack marking around the half forward line opened up scoring chances for the hosts and by half time Sarsfields led 1.3 – 0.3, McKay having scored his second from a 45.

In the second half Sarsfields dominated possession but some determined defending from Zach Porter, Eddie Devlin and Ryan Austin, along with fine goalkeeping from the excellent Michael Canavan, helped keep the score down. Ruari McDonnell held the full back position and ensured that nothing got past him. St Brigids notched the score of the game when Conor Slevin goaled following a series of passes through the middle of the field.

That was our last score and Sarsfields recorded a goal following a scramble which could easily have led to a free out. However it wasn’t to be and the south Belfast side can be proud of their efforts. The win is surely just around the corner.
