St Brigid’s Under 12 had their first competitive outing of the year last weekend when Bredagh hosted almost 40 of our players at a cold Cherryvale. Given the numbers involved the squad was divided into 3 groups with each getting a full two periods of 20 minutes each against a Bredagh select, with one St Brigids squad switching opposition after the first third.
If any of the St Brigids boys who are new to U 12 needed any reminder that this level is a big step up from last year, that came on Sunday. Bredagh were strong and they passed the ball to each other very well and provided support to the man in possession. After a slow start the St Brigids boys grew into their games and by the end of the first period our own intensity had increased and on both pitches St Brigids tackles and blocks were being made, and possession was fought for with determination and skill. Indeed some fine scores from our own boys towards the end of the first third showed that they had quickly adjusted to this new level and they proved more than a match for Bredagh.
This U12 squad is a mixture of older fellas and the boys who have just come out of U10, in many cases there are two academic years between teammates and between our players and the opposition. The more experienced St Brigids boys made their mark with strong runs and tackles while the younger boys showed they weren’t out of their depth, especially in registering points. Getting the balance right is important and Sunday was the first step in what will hopefully turn into a long and successful 2012.
Thanks to Bredagh for hosting.
