St Brigid’s and Lavey U14s draw level in sporting pre-season warm up Lavey 1:6 – St Brigid’s 1-6 St Brigids and Lavey U14 footballers shared the spoils in this pre-season warm-up played at Lavey on Sunday 19th February. Lavey started very brightly and took an early lead with a fine score. However, Brogan Austin and John Toner repeatedly broke up Lavey’s attacks and as the half progressed, Joseph Finnegan won increasingly more ball for St Brigid’s in midfield. This led to a sustained period of pressure which yielded 3 unanswered points. The first of these was a brilliant long range effort from Peter Webb. This settled St Brigid’s and they then shortly took the lead when James Smith scored an almost impossibly long free kick. James Smith then added a second after a clever lay off from Peter Lavery. St Brigid’s were guilty though of not taking their chances and almost inevitably paid the price. Lavey capitalised on a loose pass and on the back of a fine team move scored a great goal. This put Lavey one point ahead at half time. In the second half, it was again Lavey who started the brighter and extended their lead to 3. A free from James Smith reduced the lead to 2 but Lavey responded in kind. St Brigid’s however always looked dangerous and on the back of a fine pass by the tirelessly working John Blaney, Patrick Finnegan scored a tremendous goal. This was a brilliant finish, hit with power across the goal into the top corner of the net. Now it was all square. To Lavey’s credit, they did not get fazed and responded strongly with another 2 fine scores. Now 2 points down and with only 5 minutes left it was St Brigid’s turn to show great resolve and determination. Owen Winters made a telling difference when he moved from full forward to midfield. Constant pressure on Lavey’s defence then resulted in 2 scores by Peter Webb. The first was a fine point from play on the back of powerful run. The second was a free from a difficult angle which took some composure and skill to curl it in at the back post. This levelled the match. Overall, this was a great game which was played in a very sporting manner by both clubs. St Brigid’s would like to thank Lavey for their sportsmanship and hospitality.
