St Brigid’s Under 10s got their season under way with a very competitive game against Carryduff last Saturday. The match was played over three 15 minute periods at Carryduff and the improvement in the Brigid’s boys performance from last year was notable. There was a greater structure to the team’s play with defenders, midfielders and forwards sticking to their task.

Taoirleach Brolly and Michael Duffy alternated in goals while the full back line of Zach Porter, Ciaran Muldoon and Marcus Lynch each marked their men tightly and put in great blocks and tackles. Some of the forays made upfield at pace helped support the St Brigid’s attacks. More importantly the defenders resumed their positions very quickly afterwards. The midfield worked very hard with Jack McGurk, Hugo Leeson and Taoirleach contesting every ball alongside the industrious Joe McCarney, with all four of them supplying the full forward line of Conor Mulgrew, Matthew McGuigan and Paddy McAllister.

The forwards opened proceedings with a narrow wide from Conor. After another narrow miss from Paddy St Brigid’s finally got on the score sheet through Matthew. Meanwhile a commanding full back performance from Ciaran kept scores low at other end. The teams were level going into the third period, when Carryduff got a goal. The young Brigid’s boys were not deterred and some efficient team work all through the team saw the ball worked up in a systematic way to create sufficient scoring chances to earn a draw.

The team is progressing well with more maturity to their play. With three matches to come over the next three weekends they will only improve further.
