On Sunday our U10s boys and girls travelled across the city to take part in the Naomh Pól Jack McCartan Tournament and in the group stages the lads faced Ardoyne Kickhams, Lamh Dhearg and Bredagh.
Saint Brigids burst out of the blocks against Ardoyne and by half time had built up a commanding lead which they maintained to the end. Up next Naomh Brid were pitched against the talented Lamh Dhearg squad and after a hard fought battle came through as worthy winners. Having secured entry into the Cup competition, old rivals and near neighbours, Bredagh stood between them and Group Winners. For the third match in a row a strong team display by all the lads as they finished the group on a high with their third victory on the trot.
The first match of the knock out stages was against Gort na Mona and the step up in the standard of football was clearly evident. Not to be outdone our lads excelled once again and were victorious at the final whistle.
The Semi final draw saw Naomh Brid against our hosts St Paul’s. Despite playing against a strong breeze in the first half we were very unlucky not to go in at half time well in front. Not phased by this St Brigids dominated the second period and at full time nothing separated the teams. With the game being decided in extra time with a “golden score,” the game finished in the cruellest fashion when the clear push in the back of the St Brigids defender at the edge of the square wasn’t spotted by the St Paul’s ref and then the umpire adjudged that the ball had crossed the line in the resultant goal mouth scramble.
Even though lady luck wasn’t on our side on the day the U10’s walked away with the moral victory having played their best football of the season by far and sets them up for a bright year ahead at U12.
Good luck next year from all the coaches
