Under 8 challenge, St Brigids V St Paul’s, Holywood

St Paul’s Holywood hosted St Brigids Under 8s today, 10th October, and the south Belfast youngsters excelled themselves by putting in a terrific performance of teamwork, commitment and no small amount of skill.
The St Brigids’s team passed the ball to each other very well, and on a number of occasions they worked the ball from goalkeeper to the full forward line with efficiency and precision. Conor Mulgrew opened the scoring with two points and a Patrick Graham goal meant that St Brigids dominated the first third.

The midfield of Hugo Leeson, Matthew McGuigan and David Aiken kept the possession well and fed the forwards which included Joe Fitzpatrick , James Dougan and Patrick Doran. Joseph McCarney started in goals and along with Marcus Lynch marshalled a very tight defence which kept the hosts scoreless for the first two thirds of the game. Whenever a St Paul’s forward gained possession they were put under pressure by hard working defenders including Patrick Murphy, Aideen Mallon, Tiorleach Brolly, Thomas McDevitt and Dominic O’Loan.

The final third of the game was very even, with scores exchanged between the two sides, including a St Paul’s wonder goal from a free kick. In this period Hugo Leeson and Matthew McGuigan popped up with the scores which just maintained the St Brigids lead as the game finished.
Thanks for St Paul’s for the invite and for the sporting manner in which the game was played.
