St Brigid’s avenged their 2009 championship defeat to Portglenone with a well deserved eight point win over the Bannsiders yesterday at Corrigan Park. The Ports’ lack of discipline throughout was to cost them dear as three red cards make their task well nigh impossible. The southsiders led by double scores at the interval, 8 points to 4, by which time the Ports were already down to 14 men. Sweeney and Smyth were lording the midfield as the Ports badly missed the services of Aussie Rules rookie McKeever. Ten minutes into the second half Naomh Brid’s lead had stretched to nine when McCann punched to the net from a Sweeney pass across the square. The game was up as the Casements challenge quickly petered out and further reckless play saw their numbers to 12 by the final whistle. A solid performance overall with Loughrey and Christie particularly prominent, but as my man at pitchside said,”Good win but work to do.”

Naomh Brid will now advance to meet Cargin in the semi final after the Erin’s Own men narrowly saw off their neighbours Creggan by two points. Ahoghill staged a late comeback to snatch a draw against St John’s as the two must meet again for a semi final spot against St Gall’s. Thanks to John and Conor for sending me match updates. I can see why I am the only the person at a terminal in this internet cafe in Nice at 12 euro per hour!
