On Saturday the 6th of March a team from the Fun Sunday P4 group represented St Brigid’s in the annual Whiterock Tournament organised by the South Antrim Board.
First up was a tough game against Eire Og. St Brigid’s took some time to settle but soon started to show their skills. The Brigid’s boys eventually found their scoring touch with some excellent points from Paul Bradley and Patrick McKay. The forwards received a plentiful supply of ball from the midfield dominance of Cian McDonnell and Conor Slevin. The defence was expertly marshalled by Turlough Brolly and Ben Doherty, restricting their opponents to a single score in each half. St Brigid’s ran out comfortable winners in a very sporting game.
There was no time to rest as the St Brigid’s boys immediately took the field for their second game against St Patrick’s Lisburn. Coaches Peter Lynch and Leo Brown called the changes and St Brigid’s began in assured fashion, with scores from James McKenna and Joseph McCarney. However, sloppy defending allowed St Pat’s to score two easy goals, and as the second half commenced St Brigid’s knew they would have to work harder. The pacy Eoin Brown drove forward at every opportunity and the defence tightened up with Marcus Lynch showing superb reading of the game. Up front Patrick McAllister and Donal Bradley started to register the decisive scores. Despite the game efforts of St Pat’s, the St Brigid’s boys ran out comfortable winners in the second half.
Again there was to be little rest as St Brigid’s lined out for their final game against Lagmore Gaels. Due to several injuries, the Lagmore team were short a number of players, and so the St Brigid’s management lent a number of players to their opponents. This proved to be the most competitive match, as all the St Brigid’s boys raised their game. There were some excellent patches of team play and both teams began to exhibit all the skills they had been taught. Great credit is due to all the boys who represented the club, and to the mentors Gareth Bradley, Peter Lynch and Leo Brown for the very sporting attitudes shown by the players.
Next up is a 6-a-side tournament in Lavey, Co. Derry, followed by the hosting of old rivals Bredagh at YMCA on Sunday 21st March. Training continues as normal on Sundays at 12pm at YMCA and now also indoors at St Bride’s Parish Hall on Thursdays at 6pm. All members are welcome.
