St Brigid’s u12s vs St Johns
14th August, 2009, Musgrave 2009
The u12s recorded a win over St John’s at Musgrave Park on Friday evening with an excellent victory on a score-line of 2-7 to 3-0.
St Brigid’s u12 lost their previous league fixture at Rossa, and it was important that a good performance followed, against a very strong St John’s side.
At half time, St Brigid’s had a three point lead (0-3 : 0-0) with points from Peter Webb and James Smith (2). This was a deserved, yet slim lead, and relied on good team play and a great stop from keeper, Dermot McMenamin. The defence played well with Paul Stores and Frank McCormick making telling contributions.
Shane Moran and Peter Webb added further points (0-5 : 0-0), before St John’s responded with a goal, to keep the game tight. The home side and the visitors then traded goals (a great strike by Ethan Carlton, 1-5: 2-0), before St Brigid’s eventually got some breathing space with a goal (Peter Lavery) and a point (Smith, 2-6 : 2-0).
St John’s, to their credit, keep attacking and scored another goal to take the match to one score (2-6 : 3-0). This left a very tense last few minutes. An insurance point was added (2-7 : 3-0) by Enda Kelly McCann and the whistle blew for a home victory.
The strength of the u12s squad was an important factor in this victory with Rory McAllister, Paul McCullagh, Ethan Carlton, John Duffy, and Owen Winters making timely contributions to the league campaign.
