The u12s winning start to the year was setback by a strong St John’s side at Corrigan. The Johnnies got off to the perfect start with a goal from their first attack and this set the scene for the opening ten minutes. Two more goals followed without reply as St Brigid’s found themselves three goals down and struggling to win any significant possession.
As the half progressed St Brigids started to combine some team passes and Neil O’Reilly could have got a goal back after a fine end to end team move. Although, St John’s strong midfield continued to dominate play, St Brigids showed good resilience and gradually worked their way into the game, scoring two good points before the interval, to give themselves a foothold.
In the second half St Brigid’s again started slowly and conceded two untidy goals, which the defence should really have cleared. However, the 2nd period was much more evenly contested and St Brigids, through Peter Lavery and Rory McAllister scored well worked goals from open play.
St John’s ran out deserved winners by 5 – 3 to 2 – 3. The three early goals being the difference between the two sides.
However St Brigid’s can take some positives from the game. Joseph Finnegan displayed great attitude, covering most of the pitch to repeatedly win possession, and Frank McCormack was resolute in defence, breaking up numerous attacks. Daire McGarvey was prominent throughout, and Owen Winters looked assured when he came on at half time.
