Monday 18th saw the start of the of the 7th Annual St Brigids Summer Scheme. Over 70 children converged on the YMCA playing field eagerly looking to develop their football and hurling skills.
The club had enlisted the help of external coaches from queens, ably assisted by some of the minor players from the club from both the mens and ladies section. The experience of these coaches brought some new ideas, and thinking to the club. It also gave the opportunity for the children to work with county players and get advice from them on how the could improve their game.
At the stroke of ten, the summer scheme kicked off, and unfortunately so did the rain, however the elements didn’t dampened the spirits of the children who were wet but having great fun.
Having got all the rain for the week on Monday, the remaining fours days were dry, and even sometimes sunny, by Friday sun screen was needed more than a mac.
For those following four days, everywhere you looked on the playing fields there was catching, kicking, blocking and tackling being practiced by all with great fervor.
Friday saw three famous visitors to the camp.
Armagh’s Charlie Vernon came down and brought the Ulster Championship Trophy, the Anglo Celt Cup, not to be out done, Antrim’s Tommy Murphy Cup also attended. The kids were delighted to see the cups and all wanted to raise them above their heads.
Charlie also took a coaching session with the older children were he put them through their paces, and passed on a few tips.
The week ended with presentations to each age group, where everyone went home with some goodies and a quality football to practice their skills.
Everyone agreed that it was a very successful week for the youth of the club.
