St. Brigid’s hurlers go from strength to strength as was shown when they played at home to Creggan Kickhams on Sunday 11th May in Division 4 All County Hurling League.

Whilst the final score was in favour of the visiting team, this was a competitive match throughout and great credit must go to the home team. After leading 0:2 to 0:0 after 10 minutes, Creggan got in behind the home defence to convert two goal chances. In previous matches heads might have dropped, but St. Brigid’s responded well and took the lead with two of their own goals, Eoghan McKenna showing the footballing skills currently lacking in his native Tyrone. At centre half forward, Paul McCrudden like a true Glens man was showing his full complement of hurling skills knocking points over from all angles. At half time there were only three points between the teams in favour of the visitors.

Halftime score Creggan 2:8 St. Brigid’s 2:5

Second half saw some changes on the Creggan team with some of their big men being replaced by even bigger specimens. John McKeever, no small man himself found himself standing cheek to cheek with his opponent and I’m not referring to his face. Creggan made a push midway in the second half that saw them extend their lead but to a man St. Brigid’s never gave up and Eoghan McKenna this time using his stick put the ball in the back of the net. By this stage the author had lost count of Paul McCrudden’s personal tally not to mention the score. Eoghan McKenna scored 2:1 and no doubt the poor soul who scored the other goal will be telling me all about it at the next training session.

Final score Creggan 4:13 St. Brigid’s 3:8

Credit to all the players who played with great commitment, skill and never gave up. Special mention should go to St. Brigid’s chairman, Oliver Lennon who not only played a great game at full forward but also did so wearing white boots, three sizes too small. He says his feet are hurting and is diplomatically not available to play near neighbours Breda in our next match. Word on the street has it that Oliver’s eight-year-old son Phelim wasn’t happy about his dad borrowing his boots.

Our next match is on Wednesday 14th May against Breda at Cherryvale at 7pm.
