Division 4B Senior Hurling League
St. Brigid’s –v- Davitts, Wednesday 30th April 2008

A beautiful evening for playing hurling saw St. Brigid’s play their first ever senior home league fixture at Harlequins against Davitts in the All County Senior League. This was St. Brigid’s third league fixture and steadily this team is growing in confidence and self-belief. The visitors started strongly but great harrying by St. Brigid’s frustrated their efforts. Barry Gormley had the first chance to score for the home team when he went for goal when perhaps a point was the better option. The game was tit for tat and Darren Horisk in full back was superb. One Davitts player was overheard saying, “stop that @@@@@ who does he think he is, Christy Ring!” once again the full back line were immense, Michael McLoughlin in right corner and Chris Ferguson in left corner, having dropped back from the half back line. Davitts having registered a couple of points were stunned when St. Brigid’s goaled. Paul McCrudden was the player who finally stuck the sliothar in the back of the net after efforts from Donal Feeney and Eoghan McKenna were saved. Unfortunately Davitts returned the favour with a goal from a 14 yard free.

Half time saw the score Davitts 1:3 St. Brigid’s 1:1

St. Brigid’s were now in with a real chance of taking points and self-belief was high at half time. The second half began with St. Brigid’s taking control and Eoghan McKenna scored the first point of the half for the home team. The next ten minutes was nip and tuck but then Davitts struck for two goals with knocked the steam out of the home side. Gabriel McIlhatton and Collie Connolly were superb at midfield ably supported by the half back line. For the middle ten minutes of the second half, St. Brigid’s were under immense pressure due to Davitts bring a third player into the middle and crowding the centre of the pitch. St. Brigid’s found themselves being sucked into their own half, which only increased the pressure. Some re-jigging saw the half forwards and the full forward line move higher up in the pitch thereby giving the midfielders space to play in. at this stage, St. Brigid’s began to exert their authority and finished strongly with a goal and point from play.

Final score Davitts 4:7 St. Brigid’s 2:3

This match saw a huge improvement in the home team. With more self-belief, more stick work and simply learning to play together as a team, we are going to surprise a number of teams.

Training continues at Harlequins on Friday 2nd May at 7pm. Those who have failed to attend any training sessions to date, the invitation to play is still there. You are all encouraged to come and play. Anybody needing physio, give Barry a call on 07803 189 769
