Saint Brigid’s II 4.13 O’Donnell’s 1.3
St Brigid’s seconds posted a strong performance in the first of the double header at Deramore. Despite the confusion of last week’s “no game” where St Brigid’s turned up for the game that was not at 6.30pm in Falls Park, the Malone Gaels kept themselves in touch with a strong performance to record their seventh victory in nine starts.
Rory Taylor led the way with a superb display of point taking from frees, both from the hand and off the ground, an excellent 45 and superb long range points from play. Chris Donnelly showed his class with penetrating runs to score goals and points with ease.
Naomh Brid raced into a four point to no score lead courtesy of Taylor’s efforts before O’Donnells registered two minors from their first two attacks but struggled to get supremacy in the middle and spurned many good chances.
Then up stepped young Donnelly, who took off from the 45 with only one thing on his mind, seconds later he delivered the first goal.
John and Kevin Finnegan led the line well and created more chances for Taylor, Donnelly and a Jimmy King goal to stretch the lead. Greg Morris came more into the game as Paul O’Hara and Joe Marley took control in midfield.
In defence Conor McHendry made a strong comeback from injury at centre half whilst Michael Malone was strong at wingback.
Half time score Saint Brigid’s II 3.08 O’Donnells 0.3
The second half saw the introduction of Marcel Kock, Ciaran Loughran, Eddie Smith, Joe McKeever and Stephen O’Neill (not the Clan na Gael one!). Kevin Finnegan showed that a good night’s sleep and visualising the game really helps whilst Paul Brady (yes, the singer) and Stephen Morrissey showed that a bad night’s sleep is easily noticed!
The Malone men eased off a little in the second half but outscored their opponents 1.5 to a goal – Mark Kelly’s point and Kevin Finnegan’s efforts the highlights.
