Reserves get off to good start
Lisburn St Patrick’s 0.1 Saint Brigid’s II 1.14
After a hefty training session at HQ on Sunday morning the St Brigid’s management selected 18 players to travel to Lisburn.
The game saw inter county referee Gerry McClory return to action and it must have felt like a primary school contest as he reminded players from both teams that you cannot throw the ball nor pick it off the ground.
The game was played on an excellent surface but the arctic temperature and gale force wind made life difficult for both teams.
Chris Quinn got the visitors off to a good start with three excellent points from play. John McGuckian was taking control around the middle and the former Red Knight Barry McMahon was sweeping up at no. 6.
Mickey Donnelly was having a stormer and despite a good session on Saturday showed good form and found himself free for almost all passages of play as he lost his marker from early in the game.
Duncan MacAuley added two from play before Benny Reilly and Mel MacSherry added two more points.
The Naomh Brid men could have had two goals but Mickey Donnelly misread the wind from three yards in front of goal and curled the ball towards the corner flag. Not long after, Marcel Kwoch (I know its spelt wrong but my Dutch is not the best) managed to hit the post from two yards. The new boy is doing well but perhaps we should get him reacquainted with the two Tyrone girls who taught him all he knows about Gaelic football when he was in London. It’s amazing what you can pick up in ten minutes in a pub!
Half Time Lisburn St Patrick’s 0.0 Saint Brigid’s II 0.8
Michael McLaughlin got the south Belfast men off to a good start in the second half with a well taken score from play. Mel Mac Sherry added another from play before John McGuckian opened his account with a fine score. Soon after Mc Guckian added a goal from short range as Naomh Brid took total control of the game.
Then enter Mr Blue and Gold to the core Eunan Conway. This freed up Barry McMahon to the middle and St Brigid’s pushed forward for more scores.
The wind was giving Mickey Donnelly a terrible time as again his net bound pile driver was blown wide and the Derry man was left wondering what he had to do to score. But the next ball was perfect as the predator Donnelly followed a long ball in from Mclaughlin which came back off the cross bar and he pounced to fist it into the open arms of the goalkeeper!
Mickey Donnelly, Chris Quinn and Benny Reilly all added scores to negate the single effort from the home team.
Best for St Brigid’s were Chris |Tanny who had an excellent game, John McGuckian, Chris Quinn and Michael McLaughlin. The rest of you were all great!
Thanks to the Antrim U 21 contingent for coming to support and John Bogue for umpiring.
Next game next Saturday away to Davitts II.
