18 wides, Eunan playing, well on the pitch at least, Fergal McCann coming on to score a point, Gregg Morris fighting (nearly)!
I’m glad I was at Casement, the excitement would have been too much.
C MacSherry PRO 2006 signing off.
P.S. Apparently Seargent Mackle scored twice! You couldn’t make it up!!
Reserves sign off in the Bog Meadows
All roads led to West Belfast where Peter the Great was the star attraction. However the real action was in the Bog Meadows where St Galls laid out the red carpet for the visit of St Brigid’s seconds to challenge St Gall’s III’s. Ok there were two teams, three dogs and a photographer (apparently he is afraid of large crowds, wouldn’t go into Casement so he turned up looking for baldy headed men playing football hoping he could pretend they were Peter Canavan). Apparently Ciaran Loughran has been plastered all over the Ballygawley Herald.
Anyway, despite the wind, rain and end of season lethargy St Brigid’s won part of the game on a score of 18 wides to 10.
Conor Taylor, Paul Finnegan and Duncan MacAuley were brilliant.
Ceelan McCrudden put in great shoulder charge and gave one of those looks to the sideline.
First half scores from Duncan MacAuley, Ryan Mackle and Mark Kelly saw the blues trail by 4 at the break.
John McKeever Brian Loughran and Ciaran Mackle were brilliant.
Big Kevin Finnegan won a penalty and the cat like instincts of the St Gall’s keeper saved the shot. Drat!!!!
Brian Loughran cannot catch a ball sideways and Anthony McVeigh’s shins are very hard, the ball bounces back to set up goals beautifully.
Anthony McVeigh, Ciaran Loughran and Eamon McMahon were brilliant,
Half Time Naomh Brid 0-3 St Galls 2-1
The second half saw Big John Mackle enter the fray. Now you wouldn’t know that this was the mn who played for Ulster against Australia in the recent compromise rules test or the man who won an Intermediate championship medal with Naomh Brid.
Stephen Morrissey, Mark Kelly and Keelan McCrudden were brilliant.
No Big John went in at full forward. His black monkey hat looked like a curly wig from a distance and it took years off him. Peter McDermott of Meath fame now has a contender for “the man with the cap” title.
Kevin Finnegan, Greg Morris and Ryan Mackle were brilliant.
Anyway the wides kept coming and we let in another goal. Conway was sprung from the bench (or from behind a bush) and made a fabulous block in front of goal. Greg Morris got involved in an Anglo-Irish debate and was replaced by McCann.
Two points from Big John, fantastic interplay between Taylor McCann and Mark Kelly set up the score of the game a well taken point by Kelly.
St Brigids stayed camped in the St Gall’s half and score loads of wides and lost!
John Mackle, Eunan Conway and Fergal McCann were nearly 130 years old!
Great effort from the reserves all year. Thanks to all who participated 70+ players. Thanks also to Kieran Dillon for coming to watch.
