Under 12 match. YMCA, Friday 7th April
In what at the start of the day had looked to be a promising spell of weather for a gaelic match at the YMCA, the game was played in conditions that were wet, muddy and slippery for handling. Both teams, though, were mostly fully commited to the cause although a couple seemed to be more determined to have a wee game of tig than play some football.
In a game in which the ‘Johnnies’ had the greater amount of possession, both teams gave their all and not one player wasn’t gasping for breath at the end. For St Johns, (as I’m a St Brigids player I’m not great with St John’s names!) no.8 (‘Paudie’), no.9 (Jack Hannigan), no.11 and no.6 were all out-standing players in the blue and white. For the Brigids, the players who for this correspondant put most heart into the contest were Ross Edgar, Mark Campbell, Donal Prenter, Jack Langan and James Gildea. Also, ‘new’ appearances were made by a couple-new keeper, Conor McKeague, excelled in nets, and Hugh O’ Reilly for a soccer player did brilliantly.
The ‘Johnnies’ controlled the whole affair but to be fair to the Brigids Gaels they never gave up right from the start, but the opposition had more match-practice and were physically bigger, so they came out on top for now.
St Brigids will hopefully learn from this and the team will pull together, buckle down and start to do what we all know these young hopes for the future are capable of.
Man of the Match: ‘Paudie’, St John’s no.8
Final score: St Brigids 0-2 St Johns 3-6
