This game was never a contest with St Brigids in complete control from the start. Points rained over from the first minute from Ruari O’Neill, Joe Brolley, Conor Taylor, Frankie Devlin et al with Paul McCrudden and Ruari (I think!) scoring early goals. Unfortunately a record of the scorers was not kept as stand in referee, the ever-impartial Eunan Conway commandeered the only pen available on the night.
Conor Mullan and Niall McDonald controlled midfield while the defence was rarely tested. When they were threatened Frank O’Neill, Deaghlan O’Hagan, Paul O’Hara, Paul Finnegan and Joe McKeever easily repelled the attacks.
Score of the night was a chipped goal from Brolley as the keeper advanced off his line. Jimmy King also managed a goal after hitting the post from long distance.
It was left to that famous double act at the back to provide the evenings main entertainment. Late in the game Richard Smyth leapt high in the air to field tremendously. So impressed was John Mackle at the catch that he shouted at Richard. So shocked was Richard that on landing some 5 seconds later he lay down and rolled the ball into his own goals. Eunan, despite the throw ball, allowed the goal to stand.
The season would have been so much duller without our full back and keeper!
