U 14 GIRLS THROUGH TO SEMI FINALS
St Brigid’s 8-8 Davitts 1-0 18th July 2005 YMCA
An emphatic victory was secured by a very young side fielding for St Brigid’s in this crucial Championship encounter against a sporting Davitt’s team whose mentor Noreen is doing so much for the development of underage girls football.
The scoreline tells one story. The other one is the heroic performance of those who made their debut. Many of the first team were on holiday and up stepped Hanna Loughran,Sarah Toner,Molly Copeland and Alice Keenan to prove they have the talent and the determination to succeed in the fastest growing sport in Ireland.
Hanna showed both her footballing skills and brain at left corner forward to cause havoc in the defence whilst Sarah showed a few of the seniors training on the next pitch how to take your chances by scoring 2 goals and 1 point.
Molly Copeland never stopped trying and the team was very grateful for her efforts. As for Alice Keenan – she was heroic – and played like a Tyrone back rather that her home county of Antrim. She is following in the footsteps of her older sister Mary and is one to look out for in the future. You can see Down Hughes’ sporting genes running through their veins. We look forward to Alice turning up for training from now on instead of the School of Music.
Serious business now starts – a very strongly fancied St Paul’s in the semi final. They have been working towards this Championship all year and are fresh from representing the county in the All Ireland Feile held in Limerick earlier this month.Meanwhile many of our girls are more interested in sunning themselves or shopping or watching MTV or texting or whatever. Will someone in the next century read this match report and wonder where they are all going wrong?
Finally a big thanks to Davitts – they have some fine young talent including their goalkeeper, full forward and their very strong and able midfielder who scored the first score of the match with a superb goal.Unfortunately that was to be Davitt’s last score but they never gave up and this was a lesson for St Brigid’s.
We are looking forward to the blitz being run by Davitt’s on 31st July for u11 and u14s.This is a 7 a side tournament and players must contact their coaches to confirm availability.
