St Brigid’s Belfast and Bredagh GAC supplied sixteen players for a beginners handball coaching course at Queens PEC in January and February. The course was held under the auspices of Queens Sport. The basic skills were taught by Antrim County Coach,Fiona Shannon who was assisted by another star in her sister Sibeal, Damien Canavan of Bredagh and Niall McDonnell of Queen’s.

The players used a soft ball to protect delicate hands and there was a great sense of fun and enjoyment. “It’s amazing how quickly the players took to the basic skills so that they could hit the ball properly” said Fiona. “We hope to hold a longer course in the autumn with more players from St Brigid’s and Bredagh and possibly Carryduff where there is a great handball tradition. We can move on to the next skill set and increase the players’ enjoyment.”

At the end of the course each player was presented by Conor Caldwell of Queens Sport with a bag of handball necessities which will keep them in practice until the next outing.
