On Saturday 24th October in Musgrave, with good support for both teams, the under 21’s took on the much fancied Cargan.

Much of the squad comprised members of the 2015 minor team many of who remain minors next year.

The more experienced players, who in 2015 had been regular senior reserve panel members, included Sean & Finn Mc Kernan, Shane Boyle, Caolain Lynch and Cathal Conway.

Under the management of Ronan Mc Grady, Peter Lundy and Chris Mc Cann the players pre-match discussion was about playing a very defensive game and trying to close down Cargan’s forwards.

Both teams gave a great display of quickly moving the ball from defence to attack in a very free flowing game. However the defences of both teams held out and forwards had to scrap hard to generate openings.

There was the minimum between the teams at half time, which buoyed up St Brigid’s as they had started as underdogs.

The second half was a thrilling encounter. With Cargan managing to get the slimmest of leads. The visitors were starting to build in confidence. However every player and substitute in the St Brigid’s squad showed a steely determination not to give up on the game.

It was an impressive performance from such a young squad.

Relief came with the final whistle and St Brigid’s ran out winners 3-7 to 2-7.

The next round draw is still to be made. However diary Saturday 7th November as that is the date for the next round, which hopefully will be another exciting game of football.

Well done to all involved with the under 21’s.
