Last night Gort na Mona hosted St Brigid’s Reserves and Seniors. Both games were very closely contested.

The reserves were as usual up first and fully aware of their first encounter, when a late surge from Gort saw them win in Musgrave by the narrowest of margins, after we had a 10 point advantage deep into the second half. This time there was little margin between the teams as at half-time it was 1-7 each, so all to play for in the second period. After a period of dominance we opened a gap of 3-10 to 1-8; thanks to the focused finishing skills of Chris Mc Cann (2-4 in the game).

However Gort never gave up and pushed forward to end the game St Brigid’s 3-11 to Gort’s 3-9; so for the season its they beat us at home and we beat them at their ground.

Next up the seniors, with only 12 days before both teams face each other in the Intermediate Championship.

The first period was a steep learning curve, literally as we played up hill and against a strong breeze. It ended St Brigid’s a single point ahead on 0-6 v 0-5. The second half saw Gort start the better and gain for the first time a lead in game after a very quick 2 points were recorded. St Brigid’s responded and gained a slim degree of control. Ciaran Malone playing at full-forward couldn’t believe what was happening as within a 5 minute period he had two shots hit the crossbar and cleared by Gort.

Almost immediately Gort made a sortie and found the back of the net. Ciaran’s frustration was clear to be seen. God alone know’s the tension  there must have been for Declan and Andy on the sideline. With 8 minutes including injury time to go there was only 3 between the teams in favour of St Brigid’s 1-11 to 1-8. Fortunately the final minutes saw St Brigid’s run out winners 1-13 to 1-9, much to the relief of both players and management.
