St Brigids U12 Division 2 squad began their 2013 league campaign this weekend with a comprehensive win over St Agnes at Woodlands.
The home team was struggling for numbers and the game was played 14 v 14, with a blend of the younger members of last year’s U12 Div 2 squad joined by an influx of last year’s U10 making up the St Brigids squad. The visitors very quickly put their stamp on the game with Toirealach Brolly and Thomas McCarney very energetic at midfield which ensured a steady supply of ball into the forward line where Patrick McKay, Declan Heery, Paddy McAllister, Rory Moore, Reuben Carleton and Liam Finnegan took full advantage. Patrick McKay led the scoring upfront, but in general too many St Brigids players were looking for goal chances when points were available.
The rare St Agnes attacks were repelled by Joseph McCarney and Conor Mulgrew in the half back line, both of whom dominated their line and helped launch attacks. Christopher Lundy in goals was excellent when called upon and was supported by his full back line of Oisin McDonnell, Ryan Austin and Patrick Graham. At half time the score was 0.1 to 2.2, with St Brigids well on top.
In the second half Eoin Graham and Peter Megarity entered the fray and immediately got involved in attacks, while Patrick Doran joined the defence. St Agnes made some inroads but at all times the St Brigids tackling and blocking was impressive.
The St Agnes defence couldn’t cope with the speed and passing of Reuben Carleton, Rory Moore and Liam Finnegan, and with McKay and Heery leading the way St Brigids registered a string of points in the second half. Chris Lundy had swapped placed with Joe McCarney in goals and he helped block out any Aggies attacks. Ryan Austin helped control the St Brigids defence and restricted the home side to very few chances. In the end we won 3.5 to 0.2.
There will be harder games to come for sure but with one win out of one, our Div 2 campaign has gotten off to a perfect start. Next up we welcome Sarsfields to Musgrave Park next Friday evening.
Thanks to Naomh Una for hosting the game which was very sporting throughout.
