St Brigids GAC play host to the Moy Theatre Group
Having already played the Bardic Theatre, the Moy Hall and sell out nights at the CRAIC Theatre and the Marketplace Armagh, The Moy Theatre Group is delighted to bring “THE SHADOW OF A GUNMAN” the first of O’Casey’s Dublin trilogy to St Brides Hall Belfast:

“We are excited and very much looking forward to putting on the show at St Brides Hall in association with St Brigids GAC Belfast. Amateur drama is about ultimately about having fun performing but also about getting exposure to the widest possible audience,” said group Director, Tommy McIlvanna.

“There is a real appetite for amateur drama in Tyrone and I am delighted that we get the chance to play to a Belfast audience. It is a production that I am very proud of, and I can confidently say that the audience in St Brides hall are in for a real treat.”
The storyline within “Shadow of a Gunman,” arguably one of Sean O’Casey’s finest works, still resonates today, despite being set in a Dublin at the turn of the last Century
Donal Davoren is a romantic poet, played by Martin Kernan, who shares a Dublin tenement room with the rather gloomy and pessimistic travelling salesman, Shields (Seanie Donaghy).
The tedium of their existence is changed with the arrival of an IRA bomber who leaves a bag in their safekeeping giving fuel to the rumour that Davoren is in fact a gunman on the run.

A rumour which Davoren does little to quash.

And the rest, as they say, is history.
Tina Garry who plays the heroic Minnie Powell, is ably supported by seasoned amateur dramatists including Martin O’Brien, Finton Daly, Anne McCourt and Jennfier Hobson, amongst others.

Playing Belfast is not only a first for the Moy Theatre Group but also a first for St Brigids GAC Belfast, who welcome the theatre group to the south Belfast parish:

“Whilst this is the first time we have organised an event of this kind for the club, its important to acknowledge that the GAA is as much about culture as it is football, hurling or camogie” said Dermot Dowling, Chairman of St Brigids GAC.

“We are delighted to welcome the Moy Theatre Group and we hope that this will be the first of many productions that we see at St Brides Hall. I also hope that the show will act as a catalyst for drama in the area, and that some day we are able to put on performances of our own.”

The Moy Theatre Group perform Sean O’Casey’s “Shadow of a Gunman” at St Brides Hall, Derryvolgie Avenue, Belfast on Saturday 20th April. Tickets priced £10, are available through committee members – details on www.stbrigidsgac,com . Curtain up 8.00pm sharp.
