Despite a bright start by Davitt’s with a well taken goal after just four minutes Naomh Brid rallied to an emphatic victory on the last day of May 2005 at YMCA.
With some flowing football Naomh Brid scored three points without reply, the first from a long distance free, before Aoife Montague hit the net with a great goal to put the home side into the lead which they built on throughout a wind assisted first half with some fine scores from play by Naimh Henvey,Ellen McGrath,Anna Finnegan and a Claire Brennan goal.
However this was no easy victory despite the final score line of 8-12 to 2-2.
On the contrary Davitt’s fought for every ball and there was a great tussle in midfield before Katey McMullan and Naoimh O’Hare eventually came out on top and supplied the rampant forwards with great ball all of whom left their mark on this game. It was a pity that the Davitt’s midfielder picked up an injury which required her to go into goals in the second half but she is certainly a star of the future.
There were some delightful passages of football in the first half and Ellen McGrath and Anna Finnegan showed no ill effects from a hectic three match schedule in four days. The second half was a different game and the home defence was sorely tested but Hannah McGrath and Mary Keenan led by example as did Kate Finnegan, making her debut as an outfield player, and the defence managed to restrict Davitt’s to one goal in the second half. This was due in no small measure to some superb goalkeeping by Eimear Duggan.
This was a great team performance from a squad who have worked very hard since September and although team captain Jenny McMullan lost the toss she never lost the ball thereafter. Hannah Loughran also impressed on her debut as did the other substitutes Maria and Anna.
Davitt’s had great travelling support and we wish them well in the remainder of their league campaign before we renew battle in the first round of the u14 Championship. Unfortunately Naomh Brid cannot get enough games to please the ever growing u14 squad and Creggan are unable to field a team this year so unless another fixture can be arranged there will be no match next Tuesday.
Special congratulations to St Bride’s PS girls team who won the Shield after being beaten in the final of the Belfast Schools Competition and a big thanks to the teachers including Ms Joyce and Mr Duffin who along with our own Dermot Dowling have put so much effort into coaching this young team and we sincerely hope that they will all be joining in St Brigid’s training from now on.
FINALLY please note that training this Saturday may well be brought forward to 4.30pm to accommodate those wishing to travel to Casement Park in time to support the Antrim Seniors in their reply against Cavan.
